West Melbourne terminal station upgrade

The West Melbourne Terminal Station (WMTS) is located on the corner or Arden and Lloyd Street, Kensington. It receives high voltage electricity and coverts it to lower voltages which is then distributed by CitiPower into homes and businesses.

The WMTS 22kV supplies have reached the end of its operational life and CitiPower is working with AusNet to decommission the 22kV network served by the terminal station and replacing it with 66kV assets. This also involves upgrading and decommissioning other distribution assets and zone substations across inner Melbourne.

This project will deliver a more reliable and safe electricity supply for CitiPower customers across many parts of inner-Melbourne. Plans for this project were submitted and endorsed by the Australian Energy Regulator as part of the 2016-2020 regulatory reset.

As well as works at the WMTS, as part of CitiPower’s program, two additional Zone Substations will also be upgraded from 22kV to 66kV and maintained these are:

• Dock Area (DA) located on Footscray Road adjacent to the Citylink.
• Vic Rail (VR) Located within VicTrack land.

Also as part of the program, other assets which have reached the end of their operational lives will be decommissioned and offloaded to the surrounding network including assets on:

• Bouverie Street.
• Laurens Street.
• Spencer Street.
• Tavistock Place.

As part of the project construction activities will be staged to minimise disruption, and much of the work will take place inside the substations where possible. At times there will be some interruptions to the local community, while we perform works to offload and connect to the surrounding network.

Some impacts which may be experienced will include; excavation works in local roads and footpaths and some local traffic and pedestrian changes.
